Telenet is taking a diverse approach to innovation by making important investments in several activity domains. By doing so, we set new standards in the telecom, media and entertainment market and build disruptive business models and innovative products that make a real difference in this digital age.

Technological Innovation

Building high-performant fixed & mobile connectivity solutions

The explosion of fixed and mobile data usage demands constant expansion of the network capacity. In the Flanders region Telenet is a leading fixed connectivity provider thanks to its state-of-the- art hybrid network of glass fiber and coaxial cable.

As a first operator in Europe, Telenet wants to expand this performant fixed cable network to a Giga speed network offering even faster network connections to both residential and business customers, with higher data volumes – anytime, anyplace.

The acquisition of BASE Company in 2016 provides Telenet with an own mobile network covering all regions of Belgium. Additional investments in this mobile network should further increase coverage and performance. Mid-June 2017 we also acquired SFR BeLux. With this acquisition, Telenet extends its cable presence in Brussels, a part of Wallonia and parts of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Read more in our press release.

De Grote Netwerf

Announced in August 2014, this investment project of 500 million EUR will expand the fixed cable network to a vast superfast network reaching broadband speeds and download speeds of at least 1 gigabit per second.

We started ‘De Grote Netwerf’ in 2014 in Flanders and mid 2017 we’ve started to adapt our network in some communes in Brussels as well. End of June 2017, we are halfway: ‘De Grote Netwerf’ has already been deployed in more than 200 cities and municipalities. Thanks to these investments, Flanders and Brussels will become the first European regions of this size with a Gigaspeed network.

Did you know?

  • All 150,000 amplifiers in our network will be replaced or modified, just like 1.8 million other components, such as splitters and taps.
  • "De Grote Netwerf" has created 250 new jobs in Flanders.

Learn more about "De Grote Netwerf" on our De Grote Netwerf site or on our Les Grands Travaux du Réseau site.

Nexus

With the Nexus-project we add an investment of up to 9.5 million EUR over a 5-year period, to connect additional SME zones and business parks to our gigaspeed network.

Investments in our mobile network BASE

Mobile data usage doubles every 12 months and connectivity ‘on the go’ is a key pillar in our strategy. That is why we invest 250 million EUR in the coming years to substantially upgrade our mobile network (known as the former BASE Company network).

All our customers are currently on our own improved mobile network. Also the Telenet customers who used to be on the Orange-network are now migrated. We want to make sure it is future-proof and can accommodate the increasing data traffic.

Did you know?

  • We improved more than 2,500 existing antennas in 2017.
  • We will build 800-1,000 new antennas by 2021.

Learn more about the modernisation of our mobile network in this press release.

Investments in our fixed network SFR

In June 2017, after the takeover over SFR BeLux, Telenet started another network investment project of 12 million EUR to upgrade our fixed network. This enables us to offer SFR customers in Brussels and La Boitte du Hainaut (Wallonia) an improved connectivity experience.

Read more about it in our press release.

Product Innovation

Anticipating changing customer behaviours

Telenet is actively responding to changing customer behaviours by introducing propositions that offer best-in-class, user-friendly products in simple and transparent bundles. Thanks to these limited offerings, customers can more easily compare products and make a fast and balanced choice that responds to their specific needs and expectations.

WIGO

Launched in June 2016, WIGO offers the first genuine ‘all-in’ telecom formula for families and businesses in Belgium. This innovative customer proposition responds to changing behaviours among our customers, who are permanently connected and who no longer tend to differentiate fixed and mobile services. Yelo Play

As the first operator in Europe Telenet launched a very useful TV application for your smartphone, tablet or computer. You can consult the digital TV guide, watch your favourite programs live, set up your recordings even when you’re not at home, watch TV-programs untill 7 days back via Terugkijk TV from Play & Play More, or even swipe a program from your tablet to the larger screen.

Based on

Research carried out by BASE revealed that less than one percent of customers have a tariff plan that perfectly fits their usage profile. They either exceed their allowance or they don’t use all of it. That is why in September 2017, BASE launched the first subscription that automatically adapts to the customer: call minutes are automatically converted to mobile data (and vice versa) according to the user’s needs. Any unused volume is simply carried over to the next month. In other words, nothing is lost, and the user can get the most out of what is included in his/her subscription.

PayByMobile in Apple Stores

BASE Company was the first operator in Belgium to offer PayByMobile in the Apple Stores. Since December 2016 BASE customers can pay for their digital purchases in the AppStore or in iTunes, iBooks and Apple Music via their BASE invoice or their prepaid call credit.

Previously BASE Company already made arrangements with other parties: BASE customers can also pay for their purchases in the Google Play Store, Samsung Store or in the PlayStation®Store via their phone bill.

Customer Service Innovation

Creating amazing customer experiences

Positive customer experiences form the foundation for sustainable growth. Telenet is permanently optimizing its customer service models by creating memorable experiences that enhance customer satisfaction.

Netweters

In December 2016 the Telenet online community platform was relaunched under the brand name: De Netweters. This online platform helps customers to be fully up to speed with the digital world we live in. Customers can ask questions, share experiences and do suggestions to improve existing products. Have a look at Netweters.be.

For the BASE customers there is a similar online community platform where customers can ask questions and help eachother out with tips & tricks.

Strategic Partnerships

Stimulating open innovation

Telenet is building strategic partnerships that transform the telecom, media and entertainment business. The company is also actively involved in open innovation initiatives across industries and sectors. Efforts result in new, disruptive business models and innovative products and solutions that shape the digital age.

Relevant advertising

Together with the channels VIER & VIJF we launched relevant advertising as a new business model, to keep television platforms attractive for local advertisers.

Collaborative innovation

In order to further stimulate, deepen and streamline our internal and external innovation initiatives, we opened our own Innovation Center in October 2017. Located next to our Brussels headquarters, the Telenet Innovation Center is the core environment to test new technologies for connectivity, entertainment, value-added services and customer experiences. The Telenet Innovation Center’s primary focus is currently on 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), serving as a test bed and knowledge center for the entire Liberty Global Group.

At the Telenet Innovation Center we take a collaborative approach to innovation. It aims to be a platform where Telenet experts can partner up with external industry partners, academic institutions and start-ups to test new products, services, applications and prototypes. Next to that, we actively participate in industry-led initiatives that market new products and services, such as Doccle, Spencer and the Belgian Mobile ID ‘Itsme’. We also contribute to a healthy Belgian start-up ecosystem in cooperation with leading incubators and accelerators.
